Overview

An American Artist, Dennis Hlynsky (1952 Ohio) resides in Providence, Rhode Island where he is a professor emeritus of video and computer-generated images. He is a practicing artist and an early adopter of electronic media. Sculpture and photography were primary studies but soon gave way to video in 1972. Influenced by the conceptualists of the 60’s he focused his work on the creation of artworks and media to shape the culture of local communities. The US bicentennial began his study of celebration as long-form time art. He has participated in the WaterFire Festival in Providence; May Day Festival in Tiverton RI; PVD fest 2017; and the Providence Independence Day festivities.

Early conceptualist/experimental analog video synthesis was replaced with a decade of documentary. Between 1977 and 1987 Dennis advocated for children and families with life threatening illness by making films and narrowcasting these works in the medical community. This project gained national recognition through the attention of national news and health education networks. This work underscored the notion of working artists as residents in communities.

Digital technologies provided a refreshing outlet for continuation of the early experiments with analog video synthesis. He started teaching at RISD in the mid 1980’s and served as the chair of the Film/Animation/Video Program for 12 years.

His experiments with frame-stacking to trace the movement of birds gained worldwide attention.
